Who but God goes up to heaven and come back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name-and his son’s name? Tell me if you know (Proverbs 30:4).
Agur, the son of Jakeh has posed the questions. We know nothing much about him. He isn’t a prominent man. He, according to his own words, is weary and worn out. He feels too ignorant to be considered human and lacks common sense. He hasn’t mastered wisdom yet. He also is very aware that he does not know the Holy One.
He is intelligent enough to ask God to keep him from riches, so that he will continue to realize his need for God in his life. He asks to be spared from poverty, so that he will not steal. He would be insulting God if he did such a thing.
He marvels as the realization that there are things in this earth that can never be satisfied. There are four things that he will never understand. He has recognized yet another four things in this world that are small, but unusually wise. He can point out four stately monarchs. He is a man who can observe things that most of us fail to see.
He can recognize the depth of the world he lives in. He marvels at it all. He has taken the time to survey it all. His creator has spread out a place for him to enjoy. By mans standards he may not appear to be wise, but by his creator’s, he got the picture. He has figured out who holds it all together. No one but God has all the answers to the mysteries the world holds.
As you ponder about the world you live in, do you take the time to marvel at what God has put before you, or do you simply take it for granted?
