Sean Tobin, McBride councillor, is planning an outdoor movie night for July 6 to help fundraise money for the skate park.

The movie will be shown behind the high school at approximately 10pm.

“Another very cool fundraising endeavour we are undertaking is a program called the Community Rebate Program through Husky,” said Tobin. “For people who are not members of BCAA they can obtain a rebate card from the Recreation Committee free of charge and every time the shop at Husky 2% of their sales will come directly the recreation committee for the skatepark.”

Councillor Rick Thompson said the skatepark continues to develop.

“The site has been prepared, levelled, sloped, and packed,” said Thompson. “We are now waiting for an estimate to lay the cement pad by a local company.”

Thompson said the group now wants to get the youth of McBride involved with landscaping for the area.

“The Village has also ran a sewer line to the toilet area,” said Thompson. “There will be a seasonal toilet facility with running water. This facility though is separate from the skatepark money and will not be paid for through fundraising efforts.”

Thompson estimates that Phase One of the skatepark will cost near $19,000. So far close to $17,700 has been raised.

Donations have been received from the Big Country Snowmobile Club, Grad Class of 2006, the Royal Canadian Legion, Village of McBride, Regional District of Fraser Fort George, Elks and Royal Purple Club and through equipment time donated by Harley Bratton. Money has been raised through bottle drives and movie nights. Tobin said that the committee is still waiting to determine if they have been approved for some provincial government grants.

“Obviously there is still more work to be done,” said Tobin. “We want to raise money by providing some service to the community in return.”

Anyone interested in obtaining a Community Rebate Card can contact Sean Tobin at 569-0218.
