The regularly scheduled meeting for the Village of McBride was held on July 10 with Mayor Mike Frazier, councillors Sean Tobin, Irene Rejman, Rick Thompson, Allan Frederick, administrator Eliana Clements and treasurer Danielle Smith in attendance.
Canada Day celebrations
Council thanked the Chamber of Commerce and Dannielle Alan for the organizing the successful Canada Day celebrations event.
Skatepark
Tobin said the Movie Night held on July 6 was successful in raising $120 for the skatepark.
“I understand we are now online with the cement crew, the site is ready and the cement will be laid soon,"”said Tobin.
Grad 2007
Thompson thanked the community for another successful graduation ceremony held at the McBride Secondary School.
“Thank you to Mayor Frazier for his attendance and comments at grad and also to Irene for everything she does for grad to make it successful.”
75th Anniversary celebration
Rejman said plans for the 75th Anniversary celebration to be held August long weekend are coming along nicely. “People are starting to get excited,” she said. “The Fire Department is going to do fireworks and a dunk tank. We are also encouraging everyone to be part of the parade whether you are an individual or a business.”
Rejman also said that they are encouraging locals to buy their dance tickets in advance.
Community Tourism Funding
Council appointed a committee consisting of Frederick, Thompson and Community Development Project Coordinator Dannielle Alan to prepare a proposal to access the Phase 2 of the Community Tourism Funding Project totaling $17,547.76.
UBCM Convention
Council discussed items they would like to see included in the Small Talk Forum for communities under 5000 at the 2007 UBCM (Union of British Columbia Municipalities) Convention to be held in September.
Tobin asked Council to request a discussion regarding seniors housing issues. “Many seniors in small communities are being forced to leave their home communities because of the lack in services they require,” said Tobin. “This is proving to be a deterrent to their health.”
Bylaws
Council heard the final reading and adopted Bylaw No 674, 2007 a Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw for churches located within the municipality.
Accounts Payable
Council passed a motion to pay the accounts for the month of May 2007.
Sewer expansion
Frazier announced that R.B. Hatchard Contracting was awarded the sewer expansion project for homes near the Airport in the amount of $22,277.59.
Youth event
Tobin presented an idea to council that the Village pays for transportation costs, through their McBride Community Forest Corporation money, for a youth trip to Prince George in late August.
“This would be a chance for youth to attend a movie, go swimming, and have lunch,” said Tobin. “I realize we have a small community with some limited recreation opportunities for youth and I feel this would be a good event for them.”
Council agreed to spend up to $1500 on the project. Details including insurance, criminal record checks for volunteers, and age of youth involved are to be hammered out in the near future.
